AAA Batteries

A common misconception about AAA batteries is that they are all the same. This is simply not true. There is the more common type of alkaline battery, but they come in different sizes, and most can be used interchangeably.

Alkaline

Many pocket flashlights and tactical flashlights utilize 5mm LEDs. AAA batteries can sometimes leak, however, and this means that the batteries will drain a lot faster than other types of batteries. You may also not be able to reach maximum brightness. They are affordable but are not recommended to use in more expensive flashlights. More expensive flashlights are usually purchased to obtain that higher level of intensity.

NiMH

NiMH batteries are rechargeable and can be used in flashlights that run at a higher power level. You can purchase a regular capacity NiMH battery or a lower capacity battery. Since they are rechargeable, they do hold the charge a bit longer, especially if they are the lower capacity type. NiMH batteries are recommended for most flashlights. These batteries are also good to use in an emergency flashlight because they tend to get a longer run time and lifespan than regular alkaline batteries.

Lithium Battery

The Li-ion battery is most often used in emergency flashlights and other safety equipment because they can withstand being stored for ten to fifteen years. A lithium battery has a higher charge density and improved battery life over an alkaline battery, but they are also more expensive batteries.

Best AAA Flashlight Batteries

AAA batteries are used in tactical flashlights but usually do not achieve a high brightness setting, and they do not hold a charge (shorter battery life) for as long as other battery types. The best type of AAA batteries to use in flashlights should be the rechargeable type. Rechargeable batteries are more economical than other battery types because instead of purchasing new ones, they can be recharged and used over and over.

Conclusion

All five of the above options can be purchased at affordable prices with price points under $30.00. They are all good for daily use and are conveniently sized to be portable and easy to carry around. AAA flashlights are an excellent alternative to more expensive flashlights with less than affordable power source options.
